Important Information

In April, 2009 the new I-9 went into effect. Form I-9 is a required part of the hiring process for employers to verify that every new hire is either a U.S. citizen or authorized to work in the United States. Employers make this verification by examining documents noted on the I-9 form that establish identity and employment eligibility.

Changes to the form include:

  • Expired documents are no longer acceptable, including U.S. Passports
  • The Passport Card has been added as an acceptable List A document

The National Labor Relations Board

(NLRB), in a case that underscores the importance that employees place on e-mail for interoffice communications, has agreed to hear oral arguments regarding employees' right to use their employer's e-mail system to communicate with other employees about union or other concerted, protected matters.

The March 27, 2007 hearing will be the first oral argument the board has heard—on any issue—in more than seven years.
